The problem isn't planning. The problem is sticking to the plan. We all plan and write our todo lists every day. However, we often struggle early in the progress because we find it hard to embrace the process. We give up when we run into problems, when we don't feel like we're making progress. It's hard to stay focused in the short-term while waiting for long-term results.
A lot of our daily routines are automatic. Like we're on autopilot. The more we perform an action or behave a certain way, the more it gets wired into our brain. Our habits direct our lives. If we want to change our lives, we need to know how to change our habits.
For better or worse, our habits shape us. Many of us lack the proper structures to support the behavioural changes our goals require. According to a report from Stanford University, sticking with good habits it’s not about trying to increase your motivation so much as taking advantage of motivation when you do have it. In the words of Jim Rohn, ‘Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.’
Commitment, consistency, and patience. These are the skills we need to improve the quality of life. To making meaningful long-lasting changes in life depends on our ability to achieve goals consistently enough that they become habitual.
